OnPage and OffPage SEO | What is on-page and off-page SEO?

What is on-page and off-page SEO, and why do I need both? & What is the difference between on-page SEO and off-page SEO?

On-Page Optimisation (SEO)

SEO has traditionally divided into two main areas; on-page optimisation which covers what can be done on the pages of the website itself, and off-page optimisation which covers activity that takes place elsewhere (e.g. link-building).
The most effective strategy in 2012 however (social media powered SEO) requires an integrated approach, with on-page content promoted off-page within the main social media channels. Please click on the following link to find out more about social media SEO - the future proofed SEO strategy that delivers outstanding results now.
Alternatively, click here to understand more about how off-page SEOhas had to adapt to changes in the search engines’ algorithms to remain effective in 2012.
Finally, if you are more interested in on-page SEO, we should probably warn you that, although it’s still very important to optimise on-page factors, it’s extremely unlikely to work on its own unless your market is particularly niche. Please read on for:
  • A checklist outlining the key areas to consider when reviewing on-page SEO.
  • A list of common mistakes to look out for with regard to on-page SEO.
  • A list of old-school SEO (‘spammy’) on-page tactics that the search engines are now able to recognise (and punish accordingly).
On-Page SEO Checklist:
  • Always start with keyword selection, research and testing
  • Meta Description tag
  • ALT tags
  • H1 tags
  • URL structure
  • Internal linking strategy
  • Content
  • Keyword density
  • Site maps, both XML and user facing
  • Usability and accessibility
  • Track target keywords
  • Expect results in 6-12 months
Avoid common on-page SEO mistakes such as:
  • Duplicate content
  • URL variants of the same pages
  • Off-site images and content on-site
  • Duplicate title tags
Avoid spammy SEO tactics such as:
  • Hidden text
  • Hidden links
  • Keyword repetition
  • Doorway pages
  • Mirror pages
  • Cloaking

Off-Page Optimization (SEO)

Defined: Off-page optimisation (off-page SEO) is what can be done off the pages of a website to maximise its performance in the search engines for target keywords related to the on-page content and keywords in off-page direct-links.
Off-Page SEO Checklist:
  • Always start with keyword research, testing and selection
  • Use Keywords in link anchor text
  • Obtain links from high ranking publisher sites
  • One-way inbound links (not link exchange or reciprocal links)
  • Different keywords in your link-ads from the same site
  • Gradual link building technology (no growth spikes)
  • Use relevant keywords near your inbound link (contextual relevance)
  • Deep linking (from multiple pages to multiple pages)
  • Target a large list of keywords (5-500+)
  • Link from sites with a variety of LinkRanks
  • Track all active keywords and refine strategy as required
  • Discontinue campaigns if ranking does not improve
  • Expect results in 1-2 months (Bing) 1-9 months (Google, Yahoo)
Avoid common off-page SEO mistakes:
  • Duplicate keywords in link avderts
  • Site-wide links causing link growth spikes
  • Using on-page SEOs to do the work of specialist off-page SEO's
  • Placing random links without keywords near your link adverts
Do not use off-page SEO spamming tactics such as:
  • Link farms (sites with 100+ outbound links per page)
  • Using irrelevant keywords in your link-ads
  • Garbage links
  • Link churning
  • Hidden inbound links

Off Page SEO Vs. On Page SEO

You may have made sure that you picked one of the best on page optimisation agencies in the industry, got references, asked for case studies then after risking it all with a 12 month contract, you invested all your expectations and large part of your internet marketing budget with the on-page Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) agency.
Months later with your patience worn through and no significant results delivered, you must be frustrated with the lack of returns on your investment and possibly even ready to give up on SEO all together.
We have been very surprised to see how many of the top SEO agencies in the UK have been very slow to change their optimisation strategies; now that on page optimisation has mostly lost all of its affect.
Is there any need for on-page optimisation?
There are some basic optimisation issues that are critical to have in place and then there are more technical / advanced techniques that can improve your search engine rankings. You should not pay for basic SEO advice and you do not need to pay much for advanced optimisation advice.
We disclose up to date SEO advice and tips to most of our clients at no charge.
After having the basics in place, creating masses of useful content is the main on-page optimisation strategy that a webmaster should focus on, but without off-page SEO you will not see your website’s current ranking increase significantly.
More on off-page optimisation…
Off page optimisation or off-page SEO is basically controlling how the internet portrays your website.
A professional off-page SEO will be able to employ their own resources* to control how search engines view your website and thereby control your ranking. Most off-page SEO techniques done well will result in very high ROI and high ranking in MSN, Google and Yahoo!
  • *One way links from their link publishing partners
  • Gradual link building technology
  • Your business partners and their link publishing resources
  • General internet resources: Powerful free directories, one way link brokering etc.
  • Online PR campaigns

10 Stats That Prove The Value Of SEO By DEEPAK RAJPUT

Search engines are a massive opportunity for growing traffic to your site or blog.

Taking advantage of this is as easy as saying S-E-O. As corny as that may have sounded, optimizing your blog posts or pages on your site for search engines can have enormous benefits for the visibility of your company.

If your company is trying to be found, don’t hide it underneath the billions of other companies, terms, keywords, etc. being searched. To be exact there are 2.9 million searches per minute. That’s 175 million every hour, 4 billion every day, and 131 billion per month for you to get lost in (Hubspot).

Enacting proper SEO tactics India can help your company gain greater prominence in search and ultimately have more customers, fans, followers, or whoever, visiting your site.

I can stress the importance of SEO India forever (and I have once or twice before), but what’s a better way to convince you of its value then show you some hard numbers?

Here are 10 stats that prove SEO India is a valuable resource to invest in:

1. 82.60% of internet users use search.

2. 70% of the links search users click on are organic.

3. 75% of users never scroll past the first page of search results.

4. 80% of search engine users say they occasionally/rarely/never click on the sponsored search results.

5. 93% of online experiences begin with a search engine.

6. Search is the number one driver of traffic content to sites, beating social media by 300%.

7. For Google, 18% of organic clicks go to the number 1 position, 10% of organic clicks go to the number 2 position, and 7% of organic clicks go to the number 3 postion.

8. 42% of all searchers click on the top-ranked result compared to PPC clicks—when searching, only 23% click a PPC link.

9. 39% of customers come from search.

10. 50% of consumers are more likely to click on a search result if the brand appears multiple times on the results page.

Demystifying SEO for Your CEO By DEEPAK RAJPUT

Google is a dark secret to most small business owners and CEOs, which is pretty easy to understand given all the buzz and jargon like SEO, PPC, AdWords, SERP, CTR, etc.

It may not be all that important for a CEO to know any of this unless you're the marketing director responsible for generating sales leads for your sales team and you need more resources (read: budget).

Demystifying Google for CEOs begins with this question: When a prospective customer Googles "your keywords" are any of the search results yours? If you don't show up in the first couple pages, it's a lost business opportunity you'll never know about.

Think about all those weekly lost-business reports, which only report lost sales opportunities you actually knew about and failed to win. In the online world, you're losing deals you don't even know about.

Some small business CEO's have decided to stick their head in the sand.

Well, avoiding Google isn't an option, either. Consider:
93.4% of potential product purchase research is done online -- anonymously.

Nearly 2 of 3 buyers begin product research using a search engine (Google being the overwhelming favorite, especially for high-income users).

Buyers have little interest in sales calls unless and until they (the buyers) initiate the interaction.

The number of sales calls/day has fallen by 25% while the cost of a sales call continues to escalate (now above $300 per call).

Not surprisingly, hiring a sales representative is now the most difficult position to fill [and train!].

The Secret to Google

It's easy to get all wound up in the minutia, but the "secret" to Google comes down to just 1 thing: Regularly posting relevant, findable content.

The big surprise to small business CEOs is that the content Google (and their prospective customers) are searching for is in their head or on their hard drive. They just need to get it onto their websites in the format Google wants.

And while the accepted "format" isn't a secret, as reported in my article last week, our research of the top 1 million websites shows just 9.6% have their web pages correctly formatted.

With such low compliance, there's a great opportunity to jump ahead of competitors by regularly posting relevant, findable content.

Once a small business CEO recognizes they can easily master the key elements of Google -- and even turn Google into their best salesperson -- they're empowered to do even more (and sign-off on those precious SEO resources you need).

Why I Talk Most Folks Out of SEO Projects? By DEEPAK RAJPUT

After reading that headline, perhaps you’re wondering to yourself, “has Mark lost his mind”?

The answer? Not yet.

I've been involved in search engine optimization since March 2003. In that time, I have seen every angle and talked to just about every type of SEO prospect that there could ever be. One thing that hasn’t changed much, unfortunately, is that there are still a ton of people who are trying to engage in SEO, but hardly even know what SEO stands for.

Case in point:

Had a call this week with a prospect. Prior to the call, I had run a few reports and did a little research/digging around, so that I could be prepared to take them through what I believed to be “reality”.

One of my first questions on an initial sales call is “what are you trying to achieve?”. I might also phrase this as “what are your goals” or “how will you determine ‘success’”?

The answer? “I want 5,000 hits per month”.

Once I corrected them on what I believe they meant “5,000 unique visitors”, we moved on to what I thought it might take to grow traffic to those levels, and whether I believed that a sound ROI (that stands for “return on investment”, for those “SEOs” out there) could be achieved, at least in the short term.

After reviewing their competitive landscape, we find that the space (rankings) is dominated by government websites. That is to say, any keywords that have any amount of search volume and are “on target” with who we’re trying to reach, have official government web results dominating the top 4-5 positions. If we were going to make any headway, we would need to (at least in the initial phases) build out content to target the long tail until we earn the right (and Google’s trust) to gain any traction on these competitive keywords.

Oh…and did I mention that this was a new website with all of three websites linking to it?

As I explained to this prospect, “this could take a while”. And, “while the perception is that search engine optimization traffic is ‘free’ traffic, that is not the case…you’ve gotta earn it.”

After years of “selling” (have I mentioned that I really don’t like using that word?) SEO, I had a gut feeling that this prospect had no idea what SEO looked like, how it was done, how it should be measured, or much anything else. Mind you, I’m not throwing this guy under the bus.

SEO can be a challenging thing to wrap your head around. It’s not as “easy” as buying traditional media and many people are still trying to evolve to the “new ways” in which companies should be marketing themselves (i.e., getting into marketing programs that can be measured and optimized).

One other thing that I knew? This guy was not going to wait months for results…he needed leads, today, and needed ROI very soon.

When you’re building your initial presence into the search engines, you can expect it to be an investment of time and money. Did you catch that? An “investment”, meaning that you’re not expecting quick returns…you’re going to invest time and money into something that you hope will one day be a sound investment and provide ROI.

Feeling that I was on the right track, I helped this person understand ROI. And, when you take into account the cost of their employee(s) working on the SEO initiative, the cost (time/money) of creating content, the cost of an agency assisting with SEO efforts, etc., SEO was not going to provide an ROI for this particular prospect for quite some time. So, I recommended PPC. And why not?

When you get into PPC, it can provide some great information that you can – one day – take into your SEO efforts. You might learn which keywords “work” (convert into leads) and which do not. You might find which ones convert better than others, and decide to build additional content into your website, based upon this information. You might find that your website doesn’t convert traffic into leads/sales at all (which is great to know, before you work 12 months on obtaining that coveted number one ranking on that highly competitive keyword).

Our industry has matured, but there are still many prospects out there trying to “get into this SEO thing” without much thought as to why, how, how much, etc…

I ask each of you out there who own/operate or otherwise influence decisions at SEO agencies to help these folks. Sometimes helping them involves walking away from money. As a small business owner myself, I know that’s hard to do…but, often, it’s the right thing to do.

Many prospects still feel “icky” about our industry. Who can blame them when prospects, such as the one above, can call 10 companies and find 8 that would gladly take their money without providing any insight on how results can be achieved, how long it might take and let them know if it’s even possible/reasonable to expect ROI?

Let’s all do our part by walking away from business that we shouldn’t take. Let’s commit ourselves to being honest about expectations and the work necessary to see results.

SEO India Company – Are Social Signals Taking Over? By DEEPAK RAJPUT

Several have talked about SEO India is on the route to be a thing of the past but what people neglect is the fact that SEO companies India and especially the good ones just adopt better and more ethical practices.

But the question on everybody’s lips is what works now with SEO?

Put simple the answer is social signal, the search engine methods as time goes by are putting more emphasis of social media mentions into the ranking factors.

This doesn’t require a company obtaining a large number of likes on Facebook, it is all about the idea of appealing your internet social network community and effectively driving them to share and reccommend your website socially.

One of the primary SEO News By Google factors now has become social signals, the day may never arrive when SEO is totally social yet a major part of ranking factors will be attributed to this.

“If Google sees that your business has plenty of social proof on all social media platforms from a spread of your website or business information, then the algorithm will understand that your website is well worth the real estate of the first page of Google.” says Deepak rajput is co-Director at SEO company India Map.

The new backlink with SEO India Company is your previous customer of website visitor mentioning your site on all social media platforms. If a person is engaged enough to mention your site online on Twitter, Facebook, Stumbleupon etc, this is the most valuable online mention your website will get.

I would like to ask the community here, if they have noticed increased social mentions of your business having had a positive correlation with SEO efforts.

SEO India Firm Oracle Digital Answers Question: Is SEO Dead?

Deepak Rajput, Director of Operations for Oracle Digital, took most of the SEO industry India to task in a blog post entitled: “Is SEO Dead? An Industry That Committed Suicide.” The post took many SEO professionals to task for taking too many shortcuts, and trying to subvert Google’s purpose: finding relevant and entertaining content for those who use their search engines.

Deepak wrote that he is upset that unscrupulous SEO firms have caused much of the public to think that SEO means “gaming the system,” and feels that firms which employ “black hat” techniques have “tainted” the very term SEO, and also the entire industry. Maher also pointed out that “many SEO companies should be ashamed of themselves.”

He also explained that many “bricks and mortar” businesses invested a lot of money with seemingly-legitimate SEO companies, only to see their businesses ruined due to Google burying their websites as a result of the updates detecting fraudulent manipulation of Google’s algorithm. The post also referred to many SEO firms as “lazy” and “cheating the system.”

The general tone of the post is that Maher is happy that the updates happened, because they have eliminated many of the shortcuts that caused users to be directed to sites that weren’t really sites at all, but pages designed to give as little information as possible while enticing searchers to buy products.

According to Deepak, “Those of us who are honest, and work hard to give the best possible content to users, have been disgusted with the shortcuts and dishonest techniques that have been able to pass as ‘SEO.’ People and companies who cheat and game the system have hurt their customers, the public, and even Google.”

Deepak continued: “Since the beginning of SEO, we have seen a constant battle between Google and those who are too lazy to do things right. The cheaters win for a while, but SEO Google catches up. The cycle repeats, over and over. Though it looks like the sides take turns winning and losing, the sad truth is that everybody loses. Google doesn’t get what they want, and the public doesn’t get what they want.”

Consequently, Deepak is very happy with the year’s updates. “What we’re seeing now is that people are finally getting what they are looking for when they search: great content that is relevant to their searches. Finally, those of us who are doing it right are being rewarded by Google, and those who take shortcuts are being penalised.”

Deepak Rajput, Business Development Director for Oracle Digital, weighed in on the post, and how the updates have affected his side of the business: “Here at Oracle Digital, we think the current updates were a long time coming. We are finding that we are getting even better results for our clients by doing things right, now that so many shortcuts have been eliminated. The days of instant gratification and gaming the system are over. The way to get to the top of Google is to work hard, provide great content, and set it up in a way that provides a lot of organic backlinks.”

Rajput continued, “It’s not really that big of a secret; all you have to do is give Google what it has wanted all along. It takes a lot of work and a lot of content, but the rewards are greater, because there are still a lot of people out there who aren’t willing to work as hard as we do.”

He summed up: “Clint’s post should be required reading for anyone who embarks on an SEO campaign. What used to pass for SEO INDIA is, indeed, dead, but true SEO is alive and well. You just have to roll up your sleeves and work.”

Raksha Bandhan: A Bond Inviolable - Deepak Rajput

Happy Raksha Bandhan 2012

Raksha Bandhan is not just a festival in India. It’s an emotional experience. It is not just tying of a thread round the wrist of a brother by a sister. It symbolizes a never ending link. It is a symbol of a sacrosanct relationship, above any doubts and is absolutely transparent. It has many dimensions. It enriches a person’s life in many ways and also it motivates a brother to assure his sister of protection from his side.

All over India this festival is celebrated with utmost enthusiasm. Raksha Bandhan takes place on Poornima (full Moon day) of Shravan month. Our shashtras categorically mention that this festival doesn’t take place in the Bhadra of Shravani and Falguni nakshatras. This year Raksha Bandhan will take place on 2nd August. The auspicious time for tying Rakhee will be between The Sun Rise and 08.57 hrs only.

There are several mythological sagas concerning the festival of Raksha Bandhan. One of them is when the demon king, Bali, had with his religious rituals threatened the throne of Indra, the latter then sought the help of Lord Vishnu. He then came to Bali in Vaman Avtaar (Dwarf Manifestation) and asked for a donation of three steps of land. Although king Bali had made out the plan of gods, he abided by his word. Then, in one step, Vishnu covered heaven and in his second step, he took in the whole earth. Then, for the third one, Bali offered his head. By the touch of lord’s holy foot, king Bali attained salvation and reached heaven. Immensely pleased with Bali’s commitment, lord asked the demon king to get some boon in return for fulfillment of his promise. Bali asked Vishnu to remain before him day and night. Lord Vishnu became the doorkeeper of the king. Then, on advice of Narad, Lakshmi tied a thread on the wrist of king Bali and got Vishnu back to her. Vishnu’s release took place on poornima of Shravan month. The festival of Rakhee is, therefore, observed from that day.

Once, Draupadi tied a strip of her saree on the finger of Lord Krishna, when it was hurt while he was killing Shishupal. While Draupadi was being stripped before others, Lord kept her honour intact by throwing a never ending cloth around her. The incident is set to have happen at poornima of Shravan month.

Even the Moughal King, Humayun, showed his deference towards the significance of Rakhee. He didn’t take measures against the attack of Shershah Soori and went away to save and help the widow Rajpoot queen of Chittaur, Karnavati, who had sent a rakhee to Humayun.

This festival is celebrated in different ways and in different names in different states of India. In Uttarakhand it is called Shravani. In Orrisa it is called Avani Avittam. Some others call it Hariyali Teez.

All over the country, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated with some variation in ritualistic performance. Notwithstanding the regional differences and some local traditions, the similarity lies in the fact in all these varieties, the festivities involved express intense joy, exalted mood and emotional vivacity.

Rakhee- thread- is not tied only by a sister on the wrist of a brother. A family purohit (Brahmin) ties it round his client’s wrist for his raksha (protection) too. At times it is also tied on the wrists of parents and elders. At some another level of interpretations, this tying of Rakhee round someone’s wrist is an avowal of one’s commitment to and identification with someone else.

The elaborate preparation of eatables and other formalities are much in practice in this festival all over India. The eatables like Kheer, Pooris, Ghevar, Halwa, Kachauri and a number of other scrumptious regional delicacies can be a source of any gourmet’s delight.

Deepak Rajput Views:-

In some regions of this country, at the time of this festival, Brahmins, even change there Janeu (the sacred thread) as it is considered to be the best day for this ritual.

While a sister is tying a Rakhee on her brother’s wrist, she puts on his forehead a tilak (mark) with paste made of turmeric, saffron and sticks some grains of rice on the mark.

In the present day context too, this festival holds lots of significance. At a time when the human beings seem to have been losing fast their emotional attachment with their loved ones and getting dehydrated of their tender feelings, this festival brings about a sure transformation of one’s self.

Mainly, this festival represents a bond- link – a commitment…What could be greater and more beautiful than a relationship between a brother and a sister!

Long back some not very educated females of the Uttarakhand tied rakhees round the tree trunks and didn’t allow the officials to fell the trees. Thus the commitment of these sisters to their brother trees came to be known as ‘Chipko Andolan’ in that region.

The glory of this festival lies in its comprehensive nature. Its facets are many and these project several aspects at an interpretative level.

Thus, the very word Raksha Bandhan stands for bond-commitment to protect someone. It means something ineluctable under any circumstances.

The Role of SEO in Online Dental Marketing

It makes sense to include search engine optimization (SEO) in every online dental marketing strategy, but it's often added as a separate item from the website. New marketing plans from Online Dental take a different approach -- dynamic SEO is included with every dentist website to attract more new dental patients.

To understand why including SEO is so important, it helps to look at what can happen if it's left out. In a worst case scenario, this can mean that the dental practice website has no on-page or on-site optimization -- a situation that can prevent patient prospects from finding the site in the search engine results pages (SERPs), and that may be difficult or expensive to correct after the site is already built.

In contrast, dental websites are designed to automatically SEO for local keywords based on the dental practice's address, and for dental market keywords based on the doctor's choice of services upon which to focus – for example, family dentistry, braces, sedation dentistry, dental implants, dentures, etc.

“Some SEO companies say they can guarantee you first-page results in Google overnight,” says Jim Du Molin, founder of Online Dental. “It's not true -- no one can promise that! The only way to get good placement in organic search engine listings is by optimizing your web presence as part of a cohesive internet dental marketing campaign.”

The programming behind search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing is hidden, and a practicing dentist doesn’t have time to develop and implement an effective SEO strategy or keep up with the latest changes. That's why dental marketing from IDA automatically builds SEO into every dental website via the dental practice's Control Panel.

“Based on the information a dentist provides in the Control Panel, we search engine optimize every page of their website. It’s all done automatically, and it’s all customized with the dentist and dental practice’s exact information,” adds Du Molin.

Free Fonts Sites List By Deepak Rajput

If free fonts were offered at a restaurant, most web page designers would weigh 500 pounds. There are thousands and thousands of free fonts available, many of them interesting, well-designed and useful. Anyone who limits themselves to what comes loaded on their computer is missing out on one of the great joys of designing for a website, advertising, books or any other form of the written word.
True, many free fonts are quirky display (advertising) typefaces – not the sort of fonts in which you’d want to set text for every-day reading. If you want a classic text font, such as Garamond, you’ll have to pay, one way or another. (We’ll assume you already know the pitfalls of using pirated software; in return, you’ll be spared the obvious bad puns about using “hot type.”)
The other pitfall, involving malware hidden in a downloaded font file, are equally obvious. When downloading any software – particularly free software – it is the responsibility of the recipient to judge the trustworthiness of the source. Even then, many of the “free font” sites are simply acting as bazaars for freeware and, while they wouldn’t intentionally offer “buggy” downloads – they don’t necessarily know what lurks deep in the digital guts of these files. Beware, be careful and be sure toalways run downloaded files through a malware-checking program.
Why do sites offer free fonts? What’s the catch? For one thing, many sites are actually trying to sell something – a font management system, a one-click library of thousands of fonts, other (fee-based) fonts, advertising, links to other sites, whatever – and offer free fonts as a come-on. It’s like those free samples at the grocery store. A lot like that, in fact: nice little snacks, but not a balanced meal.
Who among us hasn’t taken advantage of taking a nibble of that sample of microwavable kung-pao chicken without actually buying the Chinese-dinner-in-a-box the store is selling? Even so, it’sdanged good kung-pao chicken, isn’t it? There are also other reasons: Graphic designers trying to make a name for themselves by designing and giving away some cool fonts and even some type hobbyists/fanatics who just do this sort of thing in their spare time. Sometimes they’ll ask for a donation, sometimes they just give the fonts away for the sheer joy of creativity. Just be grateful and enjoy the type.

1001 Free Fonts

Probably the granddaddy of all free font sites, it was founded in 1998. There are quite a few free fonts (and, no, we didn’t count them all) offered for both Windows and Macs. The fonts are arranged by style (“Comic,” “Rounded,” “Old English,” etc.), but if you know the name of the font there is a search tool. All of the fonts are roman, so the so-called “Russian” fonts are not Cyrillic, but cute Russian-looking roman fonts. They do offer stuff for sale – a 10,000 font library for $19.95 and links to pay-for-use fonts – but they don’t shove the advertising in your face.

You can preview the entire font before downloading

Fontm Fonts

New font site contains hundreds of high quality fonts, and the list continues to grow each day.

Larabie Fonts

Ray Larabie is one of the pioneers of digital type design. He began designing fonts on a Tandy
TRS-80 (back when the earth’s crust was still cooling), creating – and giving away – over 300 fonts. He worked as a typographer for a videogame production company (the titles on Grand Theft Auto are his design; take that, Stanley Morison) before setting up his own type foundry, Thypodermic Fonts. Most – but not all! – of the fonts offered here are free. A great selection from a very talented typographer.

High Fonts

A massive collection of both free and fee fonts. As of mid-May 2012, they list 3,218 free fonts and 25,084 commercial faces. They are listed alphabetically, which means lots of browsing, but that’s half the fun, anyway. There are also quite a few links to other free font sites which, if you follow them, will soon get you tangled in a delightful maze of free fonts and soon fill up your webpage browser bookmarks file and/or your hard drive.

Note the ‘Georgia’ font, which might make a good text face

California Fonts

O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! A wonderful collection of 20,000 fonts, with a detailed classified list, including lots of dingbats and even barcodes. Also included is a free download for the Skrifttype Manager software. A few non-roman faces as well.

Search Free Fonts

With more than 13,000 fonts, this website is bound to have some overlap with other sites, but what makes it different is that it gathers non-Roman (or, “non-Latin” as they call them) into one group. There’s another section for Cyrillic, including some wonderfully obscure ones (Macedonian Church, for example).

One font to bind them all…

Font Squirrel

Despite the name, these folks are less interested in quantity than quality. Their headline, “Only the Best Commercial-Use Free Fonts,” shows a deliberative process for their selection. With about 1,500 fonts, they also have theme packages (called “kits”). Be sure to look at their blog and forum.
Font Squirrel’s ‘Retro Kit’ includes the hard-to-find Kelmscott.

Fontspace

Not only well-organized and easy to use, they provide a variety of ways to search their collection of 17,246 fonts: categories, alphabetical, year uploaded (not designed), by specific character and even a “random font” option! There are a variety of license levels, depending upon the font, which are explained in their excellent FAQ page.

At this point, even the most rabid font fanatic should be getting a headache… and this is only a tour of the highlights of free sources for fonts. There are also some very specialized sources for such fonts as linguistic fonts (for languages without a system of writing), technical fonts (fields of science, mathematics and engineering, for example, have their special symbols), historical fonts (there is a group that is gathering, digitizing and selling – for a very small price – fonts of 19th century wood type) and many, many others.
The next time you decide to just settle for Times New Roman (although there’s nothing wrong with that face, mind you), but you think you might want to go browsing for something a little different, these sites will give you a place to start. Here’s hoping you don’t bill by the hour, though.
